Silk industry indicators witness declines in 2008

For the purpose of silk rearing, about 17,508,000 sheets of seed were provided to farmers throughout the year in 2008, down 17.24 percent y-o-y; however, cocoon production reached about 658,600 tons, up 16.27 percent when compared with 2007.

Egg production of first generation hybrid silkworm was 18,145,000 sheets throughout 2008, representing a decline of 3,697,000 sheets from the previous year, or a year-on-year drop of about 16.93 percent.

Cocoon purchase registered 540,600 tons throughout the year, a drop of about 17.47 percent when corresponded with 2007 and average price for spring and summer cocoons was averaging 745-1230 and 600-900 Yuan per 50 kg respectively.
