FICCI said that the current characteristics of textiles for Indian defence are not adequate and need to be upgraded to global standards. There are number of features being adopted by defence forces world over that are not found in Indian context.
For instance, self detoxifying (By incorporation of reactive Nano-particles); Sweat Management (By using technical synthetic fibres that have the ability to absorb five times more sweat) and Integration of High Tech Material (like sensors, actuators etc.) are same of the important properties displayed by textiles used in defence worldwide. In its interaction with the DRDO, FICCI has observed that number of textile materials need to be improved and upgraded.
FICCI said that there is a need to incorporate global standards for textiles and technical textiles used in our defence. The fabric used in defence should be multi-risk protective fabric that can provide protection against-heat, flame, electric arc, static electricity, projectiles, wind, water & liquid chemicals.
Simultaneously, these fabrics need to be comfortable, light weight, breathable and durable, noted FICCI. FICCI observed that worldwide defence scientists are using nano-technology to create materials in the properties that would revolutionise military technology.
A 21st century battle suit embedded with nanotechnology can stop bullets, detect chemical and biological agents, monitor wounded soldier's vital signs, administer basic first aid and also communicate with headquarters. All this would be feasible in Indian context, provided our defence forces promote more exchanges with the industry and encourage domestic manufacturing and innovation in technical textiles, said FICCI. At a time when the demand for our textiles products is weakening in the overseas market, strengthening industry-defence partnership in this area would provide new market avenues for Indian textiles and technical textiles industry.
