Peru has a very vibrant handicrafts industry, whose traditions goes back by a few centuries and have scored very good gains in 2008 at a time when the global handicraft industry as a whole had plunged in to a depressing phase, with very high negative growth rates.
“Exports from the sector touched US $42 million a growth of nearly 100 percent in the last four years”, informed the Minister of Tourism Ms Mercedes Araoz, during a ceremony to celebrate the National Craftsman day in the city of Ayacucho.
She said, “Our handicrafts are a reflection of our culture and make Peru an attractive destination for tourists and the true identity of the craftsmen is revealed though the beauty and textures of the products they manufacture”.
Peru hosts two very important trade fairs in April, which promotes the sale of handicraft products, Peru Gift Show and Perumoda Fashion Show. The Peru Gift Show features handicraft and home textiles and many other home decorative products.
