The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SGCCI), one of the oldest chamber of commerce in the country has organised an international trade fair in the textile city of Surat, Gujarat aptly called, “Fibretofashion Expo 2009”, which began from April 17 and will continue till April 20.

The trade fair has around 120 participants from across the spectrum of the value chain extending from textiles to clothing like fibres, yarns, fabrics, accessories, packaging, technical textiles, machinery and many other sub-categories from the sector. Alongside, seminars have also been arranged to impart technical knowledge.

One of these seminars, “Emerging trends in future fibres” had doyens from the past and present speaking on this subject, which included; Dr Roy, Past Group President of Arvind Mills Ltd, who presented a power packed presentation to the delight of the audience. He was earlier felicitated by Mr Chetan Shah, President of SGCCI.

Mr Roy began by speaking about technology and said that scientific know-how is embodied in people, plants, patents, labs and equipments from which emerges a manufacturing process, product and service, or all of these, that, if recognized as a resource, can be managed to give a competitive edge in the market place.

Next he dwelled upon the five forces that shape industry competition, which he termed as the 'Red Ocean', namely, threat of new entrants, bargaining power of suppliers, bargaining power of buyers, threat of substitute products and said, all revolve around a common and the fifth force called as the rivalry among existing competitors.

After speaking on the Red Ocean he explained the meaning of Blue Ocean, which he said was created from the industries, within the Red Ocean, but are not existent as of date lost in a market place, untainted by competition and philosophically added by saying that 'Demand is created rather than fought over'.

He spoke at length on the tribulations and achievements of the European and Japanese textile industry and the cornerstones of success achieved by the Japanese in upgrading their product offerings with changing times and functionalities like human friendly, comfortable and earth friendly textiles.

He concluded his presentation by speaking about identifying five critical behavioral functions which are needed for effective innovative projects like, Idea Generation, Entrepreneuring or Championing, Project Leading, Technological Gate-Keeping or Antennal Technologists and Sponsoring or Coaching.
