The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Surat Embroidery Association had recently organised a textile exhibition 'fibre to fashion Expo 2009', which ran from April 17-21, 2009 and received enthusiastic participation from exhibitors and visitors alike from across India.

The fair was thrown open by the Secretary in the Ministry of Textiles, Ms Rita Menon. All the honoured and assembled guests were welcomed by the President of the chamber, Mr Chetan Shah, who said that this expo has been organised with the specific purpose of promoting the textile city of Surat in national and global markets.

The Chairman of the exhibition committee Mr Mahendra Kajiwala gave out details and the profile of the exhibitors and the seminars on various subjects which had been arranged for the benefit of the participants as well as the visitors. There are nearly 125 exhibitors from across the entire value chain who took part in the expo.

Later on, Mr Arun Jariwala, Chairman of Federation of Indian Art Silk Weaving Industry (FIASWI), explained the growth chart of the textile industry in Surat and said that the way cotton industry has grown by leaps and bounds, the very same opportunities exist in the man-made fibre industry too, of which Surat will take full advantage.

The guest of honour, Mr JN Singh who is the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Textiles said that it was a matter of pride, that the Surat textile industry was able to absorb the jobless workers from the diamond industry which has been hit hard due to the recessionary trends prevailing in global markets.
