According to the provisional estimates of the Coir Board, in the year 2008-09, India's coir products export had increased marginally by 1.22 percent. Total coir products exports in 2008-09 figured at 189,858 tonnes against 187,567 tonnes in 2007-08. In terms of value, there was an increase of 5.22 percent at Rs. 6.238 billion, which was Rs. 5.9288 billion in previous year.

These exports witnessed a deep downturn during the month of March, which reflected a 1.58 percent and 12.85 percent drop in volume and value, respectively. During 2008-09, all the nine coir-based products have seen decline in exports, except coir fibre and coir pith.

Among these, the most affected products were coir rugs and carpets, in which a 64 percent decrease was registered in volume and 50 percent in value. Coir yarn exports decreased by 37 percent while a drop of 23 percent was registered in exports of coir matting during 2008-09.
