US imports of textile & apparel record double digit decline

The preliminary statistics recently released by the U.S Office of Textiles and Apparel shows that textile and apparel imports by the United States in January-April of 2009 continued to show a downward trend, with the majority of imported categories representing a double-digit decline.
From amongst them, textile and apparel imports from China indicated larger difference in increase or decrease from the 143 categories. While, imports of 72 categories showed growing trend, the categories originally under restriction agreement grew faster, some of them even increased by several times.
The fastest growing categories were category 222 (knitted fabric), category 347/8 (cotton trousers), category 338/9 (cotton knit shirts), category 638/9 (fiber knit shirts) and category 352/652 (underwear), which increased by more than one times and category 222 (knitting fabric) gained more than 4 times.
