Inflation up, benzene prices dearer by 27%

The official Wholesale Price Index for 'All Commodities' (Base: 1993-94 = 100) for the week ended 2nd May 2009 rose by 0.4 percent to 231.6 (Provisional) from 230.7 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 0.48 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 02/05/2009 (over 03/05/2008) as compared to 0.70 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 25/04/2009) and 8.73 percent during the corresponding week (ended03/05/2008) of the previous year.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarized below:- PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 22.02%)
The index for this major group rose by 0.4 percent to 254.7 (Provisional) from 253.7 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-
The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group rose by 0.8 percent to 233.3 (Provisional) from 231.5 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of raw wool (24%), raw rubber and sunflower (6% each), raw cotton (2%) and copra (1%). However, the prices of raw silk (2%) and tobacco (1%) declined.

FUEL, POWER, LIGHT & LUBRICANTS (Weight 14.23%)
The index for this major group rose by 0.2 percent to 323.7 (Provisional) from 323.0 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of furnace oil and naphtha (3% each) and light diesel oil (1%). However, the prices of bitumen and aviation turbine fuel (1% each) declined.

MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 63.75%)
The index for this major group rose by 0.4 percent to 203.0 (Provisional) from 202.2 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-
The index for 'Chemicals & Chemical Products' group rose by 1.3 percent to 217.6 (Provisional) from 214.9 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of pesticides (33%), benzene (27%), calcium ammonium nitrate n-content (24%) and purified terephthalic acid (pta) (11%). However, the prices of p.v.c. resin (6%) and methanol (2%) declined.

FINAL INDEX FOR THE WEEK ENDED 7th March 2009
For the week ended 07/03/2009, the final wholesale price index for 'All Commodities' (Base:1993-94=100) stood at 227.7 as compared to 226.7 (Provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 0.89 percent as compared to 0.44 percent (Provisional) reported earlier vide press note dated 19/03/2009.
