Indian farmers at receiving end of US cotton producers

The cotton farmers in the US have till now been at the receiving end from other cotton producing countries like Brazil, India and African countries. But now in a turn of sorts, the US farmers are accusing India of heavily subsidizing their cotton farmers.

During the beginning of the just completed cotton season, the Indian government had raised the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of cotton by nearly 25-40 percent. This has come under the ire of the US cotton farmers.

They allege that it is a form of subsiding cotton production in India at abnormally high levels, which could lead to price distortion and are calling for action against this policy of the Indian government at the World Trade Organisation.
