As with China and Vietnam, there has been a slowdown in negative growth of exports from the textile and garment sector of Indonesia in the first three months of 2009, when compared with the months of the last quarter of 2008.

While exports from the sector had fallen by 19 percent in the last quarter of 2008, when compared to the third quarter, it has fallen by just 3.47 percent in the first three months of 2009, when corresponded with last three months of 2009.

Though on a y-o-y basis, the drop was steep at 13.9 percent, with fabrics and threads suffering the most with a decline of 28.1 percent. But an increase in domestic demand saved the day for the sector.

Local demand grew by 25 percent y-o-y, of which domestically manufactured products accounted for 15 percent and the rest for by imported textiles and apparels, of which again T-shirts accounted for 50 percent of all imports.

Textile experts aver that it was only the strong growth in domestic demand that was also able to stave off rising number of job losses, which according to estimates has reached nearly 51,000 in the current year.
