Aromatics plant in commissioning phase

A petrochemical aromatics plant, which is being set up by the Aromatics Oman Co, reached the final phase of construction in April and also entered commissioning phase in the first week of May.

This plant which is being set up at Sohar Industrial Port is considered one of the most important projects in the port and expects to begin commercial operation by December 2009.

The plant, when once fully operational has the capacity to produce 819,000 MT of Paraxylene and 210,000 MT of Benzene as well as other by products such as liquefied petroleum gas, light naphtha and other heavy aromatics.

Naphtha will be the main feedstock of this plant, 28 percent of which will be supplied by Oman Refineries & Petrochemicals Co and the rest will be imported. Oman Oil Company owns 70 per cent of Aromatics Oman Co., Oman Refineries & Petrochemicals 20 per cent and LG International of Korea holds the rest.
