Handicraft exporters demand EOU status

Handicraft exporters affected by recession, demanded equal treatment, by equating them with Export-Oriented Units (EOUs). These exporters expect new Textile Minister Dayanidhi Maran to take up their issues with the Finance Ministry.

The handicraft exporters in Moradabad, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Saharanpur and Narsapur are not given fiscal and other benefits as that of EOUs, even though they do business with the outer countries.

In this regard, an official from the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) said that the handicraft exporters should be considered as EOUs as the handicraft units are totally export oriented, who don't sell any of their products in the domestic market.

The official further informed that the EPCH would soon approach the government with its demands. The EOUs are enjoying benefits like duty-free imports and are also exempted from capital goods income tax for 10 years.

Demand for items like metalware, imitation jewellary, wooden items and wall hangings fell by 48 percent in the year 2008-09 and about 500,000 artisans out of the one million have lost their jobs due to recession.
