Politicians blamed for poor condition of handloom weavers

The deprived condition of handloom sector in Karnataka is due to the apathy of the elected representatives and bureaucrats of the state, blamed a noted playwright, director and member of Desi Trust, Mr Prassana.

Speaking at the function to present Desi Awards-2008 he said that handloom was the fabric that provided self-employment to thousands of families. This fabric needed encouragement. Further he praised the NGO Desi for providing financial help to the weavers and others associated with the sector as well as for marketing their products.

Designer Gopikrishna of Belgaum, weaver Tippanna Hasilkar of Guledgudda who uses natural traditional dye, Shakambari Weavers' Co-operative Society of Sulebhavi in Bagalkot district and Gajendragad Weavers' Co-operative Society of Gajendragad in Gadag district were presented the awards comprising Rs 25,000 cash each, a plaque and a citation.

The products of awardees will be displayed for sale at Desi shop in Dharwad till June 7.
