The sixth international conference on chemical control legislation for global product trade, is to be held by iSmithers and Smithers Rapra on 15-16 September 2009 in Shanghai, China. iSmithers and Smithers Rapra have been organized five international REACH conferences across the US and Europe and are well placed to bring the sixth to Asia.

Asia, with three of the ten largest economies (China, India and Japan) in the world, has become a key player and an engine of growth in the global economy, supplying everything from raw materials to finished goods to the European Union at competitive prices. In fact, the EU is China's largest chemicals trading partner, accounting for 36% of all chemical exports.

In recent times, the implementation of REACH Regulation from European Union has become the greatest potential challenges for global product trade, affecting every company that manufactures and exports products containing chemicals to the European Union. REACH is also influencing legislation in other western countries such as the USA, as well as some Asian countries. Companies that want to keep their global economy must comply with the requirements of REACH to ensure that chemicals used in all products, including finished goods, are safe.

And GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals) provides for a globally harmonized classification and hazard communication system for chemical substances and mixtures to ensure their safe use, transport and disposal. Countries must create local or national legislation to implement the GHS. In Europe, this will affect many products even before REACH.

Quantities of timely and valuable information on REACH will be provided at the conferences. Meanwhile, Dr Denis Reidy, Senior Regulatory Affairs Scientist from Chemical Inspection & Regulation Service Limited (CIRS) will share the successful registration for the non EU importer by studying the case from Chinese industry.

Companies and individuals in the following areas would benefit from the conference: Product Stewardship, Research & Development, Procurement, Environmental Affairs, Product Development, Quality Assurance, Health & Safety, Marketing & Sales, and Chemists & Toxicologists.
