Cotton cultivation area falls drastically in new season

According to the survey by the national cotton market monitoring system, in 2009 the total area under cotton cultivation is actually 75.984 million Mu (one hectare=15 Chinese Mu), a reduction of 10.984 million Mu from the previous year and down 12.5 percent year-on-year.
Actual cotton planting area in Yellow River Basin is 32.422 million Mu, a decline of 13 percent; in the Yangtze River region it is 18.681 million Mu, down 14.3 percent; in northwest inland region it is 24.715 million Mu, down 10.6 percent year-on-year, Xinjiang cotton area declined by 10.2 percent and that of Gansu Province fell by 20.1 percent.
Statistical data also shows that cotton consumption continues to be depressed amid global financial crisis which has further depressed the confidence of farmers and they are shifting to other remunerative crops, which is also one of the main reasons for the decline in cotton cultivated area.
According to prediction made by relevant institutions, cotton planting area is unlikely to increase from these estimates and they also aver that, world cotton-growing area will also reduce by 4.9 percent in 2009.
