Expo of North-Eastern crafts in Tamil Nadu

A recently organized north-east crafts bazaar, in the city, showcased a perfect blend of culture and tradition, which encompasses an array of products from north-eastern states such as smooth, colourful carpets of Arunachal Pradesh, cane furniture from Assam and dry flowers from Nagaland.

This was a 12-day exhibition, being organized by North-Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation. Nearly 150 craft items with a wide range of cane and bamboo furniture pieces were being showcased in this exhibition.

These craft items included fancy footwear of bamboo, jute slippers, bamboo basketry, Kauna cushions, terracotta, jute items, bags and wall hangings, enticing Muga saris from Assam, Naga shawls, embroidery or hand woven silk or cotton saris, shapes of apples and bunch of grapes carved in wood from Tripura, Meghalaya made Lampshades and baskets from green bamboo and wove traditional handlooms.

Live demonstrations of various craft-works were also organized in the exhibition. Few stalls exhibiting craft items, like pottery, idol of different gods, painting done velvet cloth etc, from the southern states were also the best part of the event.

By organizing such kind of exhibitions, the government helps the artisans to earn living and to showcase their talent, said one of the participants from Tripura and also one of the measures to revitalize the dying crafts of North-east states.
