Cotton imports up in May but down from a year ago

According to customs statistics, in May 2009, China imported 151,500 tons of cotton, up 4.1 percent from the previous month, but down 36.9 percent y-o-y, import value reached US $187 million, up 3.6 percent from the previous month, but down 54.3 percent y-o-y.

Average price of cotton imports in May continued to decline, but pace of negative growth fell. The average import price stood at $1,231 per ton, down 0.5 percent from the previous month, and 27.6 percent year-on-year.

In the period September 08'-May 09', China's cotton imports totaled 1,037,000 tons, down 43.3 percent year-on-year and average import price marked $1,439 per ton, down 9.1 percent from the same period of the previous year.

The three main importing countries, US, Uzbekistan and India accounted for 74 percent of China's total imports, 11 percent less than April, while import proportion from Australia, Brazil and Benin increased significantly.

China's cotton imports from the United States reached 85,200 tons in May, basically the same as the previous month, accounting for 56.2 percent of total imports, but nearly 3 percent less than the previous month.

Imports from Uzbekistan represented 14,300 tons, accounting for 9.4 percent up by 2 percent than in April, while imports from India registered 12,100 tons, accounting for 8 percent, down nearly 11 percent from April.

Imports from Australia and Brazil were 11,000 tons and 9,600 tons, respectively, accounting for 7.3 percent and 6.3 percent of all imports.

In the period September 08'-May 09', cotton imports from the US touched 669,000 tons, accounting for 64.5 percent of all imports and an increase of 30 percent year-on-year; while imports from India totaled 106,000 tons, adding up to 10.2 percent.

Imports from India were down 30 percent year-on-year. Cumulative imports from Uzbekistan came to 81,000 tons, accounting for 7.8 percent, down 2 percent year-on-year.

From import prices of major countries, May prices were lower than those in April. Among top ten importing countries, price from Australia was still the highest at $1,306 per ton, down $34 from April; price from Mexico was the lowest at $1,101 per ton, down $52 from April.

China's import prices from the US, Uzbekistan and India was $1,227, $1156 and $1,230 per ton respectively of which, price from Uzbekistan fell $48 from April, by $10 from the US from April, while price from India showed no change.
