Easing of border controls to boost textile exports to Russia

The Russian government on Wednesday called of the decision to conduct full inspection of Turkish trucks rolling in through the Russian borders, due to which, exporters from Turkey are sighing with relief.

Since, the decision to check all the trucks thoroughly was taken by the Russian government; the goods were delayed by at least 45 days, creating more problems for the exporters as well as buyers of goods.

But at the same time, the exporters are complaining about the arbitrary high taxes charged on the Russian side of the border. These taxes, exporters say are imposed as deemed fit by the customs officials on the Russian side.

Commenting on the decision of the Russian government, the Chairman of Istanbul Readywear and Apparel Exporters' Association (IKIB) said that this decision would lead to an increase in cross border trade between the tow countries.

Hikmet Tanriverdi said that textile exporters had suffered a lot since the order was promulgated, but now exports will receive a renewed boost and they will able to introduce new products faster in to the Russian markets.

He said Turkish textile and clothing exporters will strive to take the value of exports to US $10 in the next three years and they would also try to wipe out the 58 percent contraction they suffered in the Russian market in 2008.
