Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of the Cotton Advisory Board (CAB), the Textile Commissioner, Mr Joshi said that, cotton production in the country is estimated to in line or a little bit lower as per estimations made earlier by the CAB, due to a combination of factors.

He said, the red leaf disease has affected the crop in parts of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, while yields are also expected to fall by around 5.5 percent per hectare and CAB estimates that production of cotton to touch 29 million bales (1 bale=170 kg) in the cotton season 2009-10.

Cotton under cultivation in the country was projected to be 9.41 million hectares, a shade lower than that of the previous year. The government had increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of cotton in 2008, by 25-40 percent, which has helped maintain total cotton acreage.
