Silk sector poised to win back lost sheen

The silk industry in Bangladesh is poised to regain its past glory as goods from the sector command a greater market share with each passing year in the domestic as well as export markets.

Consumption of silk yarn has inched up from around 100 tons in 2000 to 300 tons in 2008. Production of silk yarn which stood at 30 tons, has now reached 50 tons in 2008. Festivals like Id-Ul-Fitr too help in pushing sales.

According to Alauddin Ahmed, President of Silk Manufacturers' and Exporters' Association of Bangladesh, the country exported US $4 million worth of silk items in the previous fiscal year (2008-09).

Experts point out that silk exports do not appear separately in government statistics, and are dispatched in the regular garments category, due to which the sector has not received due recognisation from the government.

They also add by saying that, if the government would come out with good policies for the silk sector, it has enormous potential and can also revive the lost glory of the silk sector in Bangladesh.
