Dr Selvam Daniel, Managing Director, ECOCERT India, an affiliate of the eponymous French global certification MNC, has said Indian textile companies would corner a sizeable share in the global organic textile industry with India emerging as the top organic cotton-producing country. He was speaking at a convention on organic textiles at the Taj President in Mumbai.

“In 2007-08, global organic cotton production increased by 152 per cent to 145,872 metric tons or 668,581 bales,” said Dr Daniel. “The area under cotton cultivation increased to 161,000 hectares in top organic cotton-producing countries like Syria, India, Turkey and China.”

ECOCERT is the trusted global name in certification of organic food, cosmetics and textiles.

Dr Daniel said over 2200 companies, with GOTS or Global Organic Textile Standards certification, have been catering to the increasing demands of the organic textile consumer. “The organic textile consumer is the most evolved customer. Such customers have a large vision for the environment, and expect the textile manufacturer to show a deeper commitment for the environment. They have been paying a premium for certified organic textile products.”

Similar conventions had been organized for the food and the cosmetics sectors at the Taj President in Mumbai.

ECOCERT is a certification agency for organic, fair trade and good agricultural practices (GAP) standards. Ecocert is a family of companies with presence in all the continents. ECOCERT's Principal Office is at L'Isle, Jourdain, France and Managing Office is at Northeim, Germany.
