The International Conference on “Steering Mature Business: A Leadership Challenge to Textile Industry” organised by Fibre2fashion and Ahmedabad Management Association on October 3 and 4 had a wide array of eminent speakers and participants from across all verticals of the textile industry.

The second session of day-1 of the conference, had three eminent individuals gracing the dais; Mr Naishadh Parikh, Director of Equinox Solutions Ltd, who moderated the proceedings; Mr Samar Verma, from IDRC-CDRC, Canada and Dr Shekhar Chaudhuri, Director of IIM Kolkatta.

Mr Samar Verma presented a brilliant presentation on 'Indian textiles and apparel in post quota period from a global comparative perspective'. His presentation included statistical data pertaining to the Indian textile sector along with an overview of the global textile and apparel industry.

Mr Samar was concerned over the fact that, between 1991 and 2008, IT & ITES industry has grown from $500 million to $61 billion in India, 120 times in less than two decades and in the same period, auto industry grew from 2 million vehicles to 11 million vehicles, telecom from 1 billion to 25 billion in size, however, T&C industry grew from $17 billion to just $55 billion and its share in India's total exports declined from 28 period to 11 percent over the same period.

Mr Samar was followed by Dr Shekhar Chaudhuri, Director of IIM Kolkatta who spoke eloquently on 'Management of Technology in the Textile Industry'. He spoke about the rapid strides made by Japanese companies in innovation and R&D, which had helped them make rapid strides on the global arena and snatch away from the US what was once its strategic strengths and urged the Indian textile sector to follow the example of the Japanese.

After which began an interactive session, where participants were encouraged to put up questions concerning the industry, which was moderated by Mr Naishadh Parikh and answers were provided to their queries by the duo of Mr Varma and Dr Chaudhuri.

The post lunch and the third session saw once again, a collection of luminaries from the industry on the dais. This session was moderated by Mr Chandan Chatterjee, Director of Indextb in the Ministry of Industry, Government of Gujarat.
