Utexrwa steps into Canada with silk nightwear

L'Usine Textile du Rwanda (Utexrwa) is a vertically integrated textile company and the only one of its kind in Rwanda. Utexrwa which started its operations in 1985 is targeting Canada as a niche market for some of its silk products.
Utexrwa, exports about 10 percent of its production to other countries in the region and also has to its credit, a vertically integrated silk manufacturing unit, right from cocoon rearing to silk garment production, the first of its kind in the world.
According to the Managing Director of the company, Mr Raj Rajendran, they have started receiving enquiries from Canada for nightwear manufactured from silk and shipments of trail orders will begin after which only they will get to know the response.
This order will prove to be a boost to a company, which is striving to develop new markets other than in the African region. It has exported US $500,000 worth of textile products to US in the current year, by taking advantage of the Africa Growth Opportunities Act (AGOA).
Silk production in the country is not able to meet the demands from the sector. Against a demand of 7.5 million tons of raw silk, the production capacity is only 1.3 tons, due to which earlier in the year, Utexrwa had to suspend production in its silk manufacturing unit.
