Karnataka seeks assistance to develop textile sector
October 19, 2009 (India)

The Textiles Minister of Karnataka, Mr Sekhar, called on the Union Textiles Minister, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, and urged him to assist the sector and sought an assistance of Rs 3.64 billion to develop the sector in the state.

The demands include a grant of Rs 500 million to set up a silk city near Bangalore, another Rs 500 million to restructure the Karnataka State Handloom Cooperative Societies and an assistance of Rs. 150 million to provide relief and rehabilitation to weavers affected by the recent floods in north Karnataka.

After the meeting with Mr Maran, Mr Sekhar said, “Among other things, there was a need for setting up a multi-storied permanent market place for handloom products in Bangalore and to include handloom weaving as a skilled labour under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

Apart from the above, there was also a need to continue the 10 per cent rebate scheme on sale of handloom products, provision of a pension scheme for the weavers and reintroduction of the thrift fund scheme for them and approval for the proposed integrated textile park at Gulbarga.

Mr Sekhar also sought an assistance of Rs. 240 million every year, to provide power at subsidized rate to the powerlooms and urged that the IHDS group approach and cluster approach schemes be extended to the powerloom sector too. Mr Maran has provided an assurance to look into the demands favourably.
