Mr. Kong Chan, Managing Director of Seladamex Co, a local agribusiness firm, intends to export about 1,000 tons of cotton to Vietnam, in the beginning of the next year. This would prove to be Kingdom's largest export order of cotton since the end of the Khmer Rouge period.
Mr. Chan had been in talks with firms in foreign countries including South Korea and China, however, deals with those firms are not finalized yet, he informed.
The company, which was founded in 2007 with US$2 million in capital, which was invested in a ginnery and a106 hectare farm in Battambang province, would set a milestone should the order go ahead, said Kong Chan.
“Cotton cropping was abandoned by most farmers since the post-Khmer Rouge era because of a lack of markets and low prices,” he said. He was also planning to buy cotton from other farmers and export it other countries.
