Merino skirtings were in strong demand on all three days. Crossbred types followed the Merinos with gains of around 3% in their average MPGs, apart from the 30 micron MPG which was up by 1%. Oddments recovered from their fall of last week, with the Merino Cardings average MPG up by 11¢ (1.9%).

Buyers for China were dominant, followed by buyers for India.

Sales will be held in Newcastle, Melbourne and Fremantle next week, when 53,548 bales are currently rostered for sale. Present estimates for the following two sales (Weeks 19 and 20) are 46,123 and 46,000 bales, respectively; an increase of 17.2% over the three sale period when compared with last year as growers take advantage of the current strong market.

The New Zealand Merino Company is rostered to offer 2,000 bales in Melbourne next week.

In South African sales, where 10,003 bales were on offer, the Cape Wools Indicator was up by 5.4% since last week against a 1.6% depreciation of the Rand against the US Dollar and a 2.0% depreciation against the Euro.
