Cotton farmers in Brazil are expected to sow less cotton for the third consecutive year as a weaker dollar erodes profits derived from exporting the white gold.
Cotton acreage is expected to fall from 857,000 hectares achieved in the previous season to 820,000 hectares in the current season, with sowing expected to begin from the current month.
The cotton crop is grown in Brazil, November onwards and harvesting takes place in January. Brazil is the fifth largest cotton producer in the world and also ranks fifth in exports of cotton.
Brazil may see its output of the white gold falling to around 1.2 million tons in the new cotton season 2009-10.
