Chumthang Kouna needs preservation- MLA, Imphal
November 07, 2009 (India)

A month-long Chumthang Crafts Training Program had recently been organized by the Presbyterian Christian, Naharup, Mayang Imphal Branch, and sponsored by the United Scientific Rural Development Association.

MLA Dr. Kh Ratankumar was speaking as Chief Guest at the concluding function of this training program who stressed on the need to conserve Chum-thang Kouna, an advantageous ingenious plant.

It is available in abundance in the Loktak Lake on the Mayang Imphal site. Popularizing its products outside the state would prove to be a helpful measure to preserve it, said the MLA.

He was full of praise for conducting such kind of training programs and said that such training programs would prove to be supportive for the youth class of the region in respect of generating self employment.

If more such programs are held in the future, it would help build assets in the state, and developing the handicraft trade in the state will augment its socio-economic status, added the MLA.

Chumthang Kouna can be utilized in making carry-bags. So, the bags made of this indigenous plant can be used instead of polythene bags, which are banned across the globe, the MLA added.
