The jute sector in India is demanding that the annual cess paid by the sector to the Jute Manufacturers Development Council (JMDC) be brought back to the jute industry by incentivising the mill owners and jute farmers.
This was also discussed with the Union Textiles Minister, Mr Maran while on his recent visit to Kolkatta. According to the industry, the amount should be proportioned in the ratio of 75:25 to the farmers and mill owners, respectively.
Around Rs 5 billion has been collected as cess from the jute mills till date, but nothing has been done to help the development and growth of the sector, allege a few of the jute mill owners, who also were also concerned over the proper usage of the funds.
