Handicraft exports drop down

Exports of textile and non-textile handicraft products of the country to other countries during first quarter of current fiscal year slipped down by 8.1 percent to Rs. 829 million, against the exports of Rs. 902 million during the same period last year.

As per the data revealed by the Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN), exports of Pashmina, one of the key export products of the country, stood at around Rs. 154 million during above mentioned period, recording a plunge of 31.26 percent.

Also, the export of other items such as wooden goods, silk products, handmade paper products and wood crafts fell down by 10.94 percent, 26.88 percent, 16.55 percent and 31.38 percent respectively.

Moreover, the export of textile products reported a plunge of 14.87 percent to Rs. 487 million compared to Rs. 572 million during the corresponding quarter last year. However, silver products witnessed growth in exports, which helped non-textile products' shipments to grow by 3.63 percent.

USA, Germany, Japan, UK and Canada are among the topmost countries that import Nepali handicrafts amounting to Rs 223 million, Rs. 87 million, Rs. 74 million, Rs. 69 million and Rs. 51 million respectively.

Decrease in exports of pashmina products, woolen goods, silk products, handmade paper products and wood crafts caused Nepali handicraft products to experience decline, stated FHAN.
