NatureWorks comes of age at UN Conference on Climate Change

In support of the UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen, NatureWorks will be involved in a range of activities, including product placement in the main conference hall, new materials for the Nordic Fashion Association's Copenhagen Fashion Summit, and a unique biotechnology showcase highlighting the latest innovations for everyday life.
NatureWorks, based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, is the company behind Ingeo fibers and bioplastics - innovative materials based on plants, not oil, which enable the creation of a unique and comprehensive range of consumer products, everything from packaging to electronics and from clothing to baby care. As a company with the unique mission of bringing to market a family of low carbon footprint performance biomaterials that offer a more responsible choice to the consumer, NatureWorks sees the Copenhagen summit as a critical platform to showcase those products.
NatureWorks CEO Marc Verbruggen described the events in Copenhagen as a unique opportunity to not only discuss the potential of new biomaterials innovations, but also to demonstrate products already on the market today. These products are the result of a close collaboration between NatureWorks and its innovative partners.

Bella Center, location for the UN Conference on Climate Change. The 215,000 square feet (20,000 square meters) of public space will be carpeted with Sommer Needlepunch's Eco2punch made from Ingeo. The reduction in greenhouse gas emitted by using Ingeo is equivalent to the elimination of 68,869 driving miles (110,834 km) in an average automobile.

At the Copenhagen Opera House, the location for the Nordic Fashion Industry fashion sustainability summit, Ingeo will be featured in a runway show of sustainable fashion as twenty designers compete. Guests will be served with Ingeo plates, cups, and cutlery, in a venue furnished with Sommer's Eco2punch Ingeo carpet. After use, all Ingeo products will be collected and uniquely recycled.

At the Dansk Industries Trade Association building, Bio, the Biotechnology Industry Association, debuts for global media a technology showcase and panel discussion to describe how industrial biotechnology applications are helping mitigate global climate change. NatureWorks will support Bio with a product gallery showcasing a selection of the very latest Ingeo consumer products.

In a first-of-its-kind collaboration around a new low carbon paradigm for materials recycling, Belgium based company Galactic will collect the Ingeo carpet and food service-ware after their use in Copenhagen and, using their unique Loopla process, convert them back to virgin lactic acid, a value added industrial feedstock and the building block for Ingeo biopolymer.
Verbruggen said, “What's exciting to us is that our partners' products and the processes showcased in Copenhagen are not things developed specially for this important environment conference, but rather represent just a sampling of products that are available today. These products are in demand not only because are they are good for the environment, but also because they are appealing, perform well, and offer unique new end-of-life options after their use.”
