Following an indefinite strike staged by 19 unions of jute mill workers demanding dearness allowance, provident fund, gratuity, bonus and minimum wages; around 52 of the 54 jute mills in West Bengal were closed on December 15. These 52 mills employ around 250,000 workers.

Moreover, the unions also want the Jute Corporation of India (JCI) to procure jute bales directly from farmers to fulfill the demands of the mills'. The Central Jute Mill at Budge and the Meghna Jute Mill at Jagaddal are the only two mills which have not joined the strike and the unions are expecting that these two mills will also respond to the strike call.

BJP affiliated Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh, has also joined the strike.

A meeting pertaining to resolve the problems with the Chairman of Indian Jute Manufacturer's Association (IJMA), Mr. Sanjay Kajeria, remained inconclusive.
