China's production of silk quilt increased more than 20 percent in the first 10 months of this year and in the process chalked the second fastest growth rate from amongst all textile products, second only to nonwoven fabrics.

Silk quilts have been traditionally used since centuries as a luxurious bedroom article, but silk quilt is truly being referred to as an industry, in recent years only. The Silk Quilt division within the China Silk Association was set up in September of this year and a new national standard GB/T24252-2009, will come into effect from February 1 next year.

According to unofficial statistics, China's silk quilt production reached 7 million pieces in 2008. Considering that it takes 2 kg of silk per quilt, the silk quilt industry in all consumed about 14,000 tons of pure silk, to become the biggest consumer of silk in China.

According to statistics from the China Silk Association, China had over 1000 silk quilt enterprises in 2008, of which 200 possess their own brands.
