The municipal administration will impose heavy fines and suspend operations of Thanh Cong Textile Company located on Tay Thanh Street in Tan Phu District, as Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Tan Phu District found it discharging untreated waste-water and fumes into the environment.

The BOD5 (biochemical oxygen demand) level and CO2 (carbon dioxide) concentration in the discharged water was 2.24 and 2.9 times higher than allowed, respectively, according to the Department. Since the commencement of company's operations, it has been violating the environmental regulations, as per the complaints made by the residents around the company.

The city officials said that the company will be asked to improve its emission treatment system in a bid to meet industrial emission standards. The environment department will take assistance from city's Department of Justice to review activities of the company and to take further steps in this regard.

The environment department informed that approximately 300 firms were fined around VND3.8 billion (US $200,000) for not following environmental and mineral exploitation regulations during the first nine months of the year.
