Handicraft exports shoots up 44% in Nov

Export of handicraft products went up to US $44.81 million, recording a growth of 44 percent in the month of November, which was the third consecutive month in which, the country's handicraft items witnessed export hike, as per the data of Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH).

Executive Director EPCH, Mr. Rakesh Kumar expects this growing trend to continue further, and looks forward for fresh orders. Export of handicraft products witnessed positive trend from September this year, following 11 months' contraction, which began in October 2008.

This year, handicraft products' export in the month of September surged up by 177 percent and that of in October by 400 percent, against corresponding months of previous year.

Fall in exports during first six months of the ongoing fiscal year (2009-10) took its toll on the collective figures of April-November 2009, which fell to $912.30 million, down 15 percent compared to $1,074.39 million in the same period of last fiscal. Around 70 percent of the country's handicraft items are shipped to US and EU.

During the period April-October 2009, export of Hand printed Textiles & Scarves fell by 6.99 percent, Embroidered & Crochetted goods by 8.06 percent, Shawls by 2.25 percent and Zari & Zari goods by 7.50 percent in rupee terms and it plunged by 17.89 percent, 18.83 percent, 13.69 percent and 18.36 percent respectively, in US dollar terms.
