Exports from the textile and apparel sector, stayed more or less flat in the first six months (July-Dec) of the current fiscal year and amounted to US $5.03 billion, against $5.06 billion, helped in no less terms by unprecedented shipments of raw cotton and yarn.

Considering only the month of December, textile exports rose by an awesome 15.38 percent, when compared with the same month of the previous year, on back of a staggering 217 percent growth in exports of raw cotton.

During the first six months of the fiscal, exports of raw cotton touched $145.84 million to garner a growth of 127 percent and that of cotton yarn reached $728.441 million to rise by 25.66 percent, when corresponded with the same period of the previous fiscal.

However exports of value-added products still showed negative growth. Shipments of knitwear were down by nearly seven percent, bedwear decreased 6.12, towel exports declined 5.2 percent and tents, canvas and tarpaulin fell by 8.26 percent.

The only saving grace came from the ready-made garments and art silk and synthetic textiles which were able to post a growth of 1.66 percent and 110.4 percent, respectively. Shipments of cotton fabric also fell by 27.48 percent.
