The humble coir is on its way to be featured in the Guinness Book of World Records. Coir weavers in Alappuzha, Kerala are busy giving finishing touches to the worlds largest ever coir mat, woven on a specially built wide width loom.

Speaking to Fibre2fashion, CEO of Travancore Cocotuft Ltd (TCL), Mr Mahadevan, whose company has taken the initiative to produce the huge mat said that the mat is 320 feet long, 32 mm thick and took four months to complete on a specially built loom.

Divulging more details he said it weighs around 1,000 kilograms and will be unveiled to the world in the next few days. He expressed hope that the mat would be able to generate attention on an industry which is in dire straits and help it regain lost glory.
