Akosombo Textiles Limited, the biggest textile company in Ghana and among the few surviving companies, laid off around 1,600 workers temporarily after closing down the shutters of the company.
The company had seen few temporary closures in the past, which had been attributed to the cheap imports of textiles from China and other countries.
The company management says that the scarcity of raw cotton and some chemicals in the company forced it to down its shutters.
