Wal-Mart places order for organic denims with Arvind

The order from the biggest retailer in the world; Wal-Mart has everyone in the denim manufacturing division at the Rs 25 billion turnover, Arvind Ltd, ecstatic. Wal-Mart has placed a very big order for organic denim with the textile major around three months back.

Currently, Arvind has a capacity to manufacture around 110 million meters of denim per annum, of which close to half-a-million meters is organic denim. The company now plans to scale up capacity to meet the ever-growing demand from global retailers.

Arvind Ltd holds the position of third largest producer of denim in the world with an export network encompassing 70 countries worldwide, with a clientele that includes GAP, VF Corporation, Levi Strauss, Abercrombie & Fitch, Calvin Klein to name a few.

To have a proper supply of organic cotton, Arvind has tied up with farmers in the cotton belt of Maharashtra; Akola in Vidarbha region to grow organic cotton. Arvind provides the farmers know-how with a guarantee to buy back the cotton directly from the farmer.

Fibre2fashion spoke to Mr Subir Mukerjee, Head (Exports) at Arvind Ltd who said, “We are honoured to partner Wal-Mart in their effort to promote organic cotton and we are closely working with other brands and retailers like Patagonia, H&M, C&A, for the cause of promotion of organic denim.”

When asked about the challenges being faced by Arvind denims in fulfilling the requirement of Wal-Mart, he said, “The main challenge is uncertainty of cotton prices while servicing needs of a value-retailer like Wal-Mart.”
