It has come to notice of the Andhra Pradesh government that, a genetically-modified cotton seed also called herbicide-tolerant or HT cotton that has not been approved is being cultivated since the last two seasons in three major cotton producing states.
Eight samples taken from the previous sowing season have tested positive for HT cotton traits. This information was conveyed to India's biotech regulatory authority; the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee.
Fibre2fashion spoke to a very senior official of the committee who confirmed the news about detection of unapproved HT cotton seeds. The committee has written to states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh to take action on the issue.
