Asian ethylene prices on decline

On March 2, ethylene prices of FOB Korea ranged in between US $1200-1250 per ton, down US $40-50 from the previous week. CFR Northeast Asia ranged in between $1230-1270, down US $30-50 from the previous week and CFR Southeast Asia was quoted at $1220-1280 per ton, down US $50-80 from the previous week.

Asian ethylene prices in the spot market fell further after the Lunar New Year holidays, as a number of cargoes flowed into the market from the Middle East, and also due to the fact that demand was limited.

The market is expected to decline further, as a number of plants using ethylene as raw material are about to put into operation, which will offset the impact on the market by the overhaul of a large number of crackers to be started this month.

While some sellers may be optimistic on limited decline of ethylene market, other sellers believe that the poor state of downstream derivatives market means there is still room for price decline of ethylene, because plant maintenance schedules are around the corner.
