Hand-woven carpets score good export value

More than $390 million worth of hand-woven carpets have been shipped from Iran in first ten months of the ongoing calendar year that commenced from March 20, 2009, informed Mr. Feysal Mardasi, Director Iran National Carpet Center (INCC).
Exports during this period increased by 10 percent compared to that of corresponding period of last year.
While in first nine months of the year, when prices of hand-woven Persian carpets increased nine percent against the same period last year, $340 million worth of carpets totaling to 5,500 tons had been exported.
Some plans have been formulated by the National Iranian Carpet Center to swell up the volume of carpet exports. Mr. Mardasi expected that within four years, exports of hand-woven carpets will grow up to $600 million in value and 10,000 tons in volume.
Persian carpets are an integrated portion of Persian art and culture, and around 1.2 million weavers in Iran are involved in producing carpets for domestic as well as international markets.
