The renowned textile products of Uttar Pradesh, Banaras Brocades & Sarees and Lucknow Chikankari have recently registered under the Geographical Indications Act (GI Act). The GI registration would not only protect these products from infringement but help stakeholders in the process of brand building and market capitalisation also.

For this purpose, there is a need to reorient and streamline the post registration intervention for converting to tangible benefits for the stakeholders. As a first step in this direction, Textiles Committee in collaboration with the Government of Uttar Pradesh and other Tier-II partners is organising a workshop for promoting brand and market linkages of Banaras Brocades & Sarees and Lucknow Chikankari.

This workshop would act help as a platform for showcasing these IPR protected products and prepare a road map for the post registration interventions. The workshop organised on 22nd April 2010 at The Ramada Plaza JHV, Varanasi, will be attended by the stakeholders of Uttar Pradesh. Shri. A.K. Upadhyay, Divisional Commissioner, Govt. of UP, Varanasi will be the Chief Guest of the programme.

Ms. Lindsey Block, Trade and Growth Advisor, DFID-India, Shri. Abhijit Das, Deputy Coordinator, UNCTAD-India and Dr. P. Nayak, Director, Textiles Committee, will also address the workshop.
