Cotton exports grow manifold in 2010

In March, as compared to February, Azerbaijan witnessed an increase in its overseas sales of cotton both in volume, by 2.8 times and in value by 3.1 times.

According to Azerbaijan's State Customs Committee (SCC), country's overseas sales of cotton grew by 151.87 percent during January-March 2010, and the revenue generated from overseas sales increased by 11.9 percent, when compared with the same period of the previous year.

For the period in consideration, Azerbaijan exported 1,787.7 tonnes of cotton that contributed 0.05 percent ($2.2 million) to the country's overall overseas sales of $4.509 billion. Also, during the same period, overseas sale of cotton was carried out at a rate of $1,238.91 per ton.

In February, 353 tonnes of cotton was exported valued at $401,300 at a rate of $1,136.83 per ton, whereas in March, 980.9 tonnes of cotton was exported totaling to $1.2 million at an average rate of $1,266.49 per ton.

In January 2010, 453.8 tonnes of cotton was exported amounting to $571,200 at a price of $1,258.772 per ton.

In 2009, 17,371 tonnes of cotton was exported by Azerbaijan totaling to $17.358 million. Sales in December 2009 totaled to 795.9 tonnes for $890,900.

Last year, overseas sales of cotton from Azerbaijan made up to 0.12 percent of the total exports. In 2009, the country exported cotton at an average price of $999.25 per ton, however in December alone; the rate was higher at $1,119.36 per ton.
