According to cotton industry experts, 2010 is likely to witness increase in production of cotton in the Rolling Plains of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.

During a recent meet on cotton manufacturing at the Oklahoma State University Southwest Research and Extension Centre, Texas A&M University Agricultural Economist, Stan Bevers, said that, US farmers will now possibly harvest 9.75 million acres of cotton in 2010.

According to Bevers, if the average output is 820 pounds of cotton per acre, the total production can add up to 16.7 million bales for this year in the country.

As per cotton specialist, Shane Osborne, Oklahoma State University Extension, cotton farmers should consider the most basic and key factors while growing cotton crops. He said, “The most important factor is timing. It is essential to be ahead of the seasonal changes rather than rushing to counter-attack problems arising thereafter.”

Choosing the right variety of soil that works best locally can be done after conducting a soil test before the onset of the season. As cotton needs good soil for planting, it is important that before doing the same, a temperature of 65 degrees Fahrenheit is maintained and the selected time for planting should have good weather for atleast ten days, said Osborne.

According to experts, the suggested planting rates for growing dry land variety of cotton is between 35,000 – 40,000 seeds per acre and for irrigated variety of cotton it is 40,000 – 45,000 seeds per acre.
