IJSG's sixth meeting of COP to be on 23 – 24 Nov

To decide appropriate jute policy Sixth meeting of the Committee on Projects (COP) of the International Jute Study Group (IJSG) will be held on 23-24 November 2005 at the IJSG Secretariat, Dhaka.

M. Gulam Mustafa, Chairman of the COP (Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles and Jute, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh) for the jute year 2005/2006 is expected to open the meeting.

A.F.M. Sarwar Kamal, the new Secretary General of the IJSG is likely to make a statement on IJSG's activities related to projects.

In the meeting the report of the recently completed projects such as, Biotechnological Application of Enzymes for making Paper Pulp from Green Jute/Kenaf (the whole plant) - a dissemination workshop in Bangladesh, Preparation of an Interactive CD on Jute as publicity material to create awareness, Preparation of Common HS Codes for Jute and Jute products including product descriptions, A New Road Map for the Jute Industries etc. will be reviewed.

The committee will be informed of the progress of the on-going projects, such as, Small Scale Entrepreneurship Development in Diversified Jute Products, Design Workshop (Phase II) etc.

The updated positions of the approved pipeline projects and the positions of the approved unfunded projects will be discussed in the meeting.

Some new project proposals/concept will also be presented by the IJSG Secretariat for consideration of the COP.

The International Jute Study Group (IJSG), the legal successor to the erstwhile International Jute Organisation (IJO), was established on 27 April 2002, to administer the provisions and supervise the operations of the Agreement establishing the Terms of Reference of the International Jute Study Group, 2001.

The organisation is the outcome of a series of meetings and UNCTAD conferences, which commenced in March 2000 in Geneva and concluded in April 2001 also in Geneva.
