The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has constituted the APTMA's 'Elders' Committee' to carry out further negotiations with the Ministry of Textile Industry (MinTex) on the issue of cotton crisis existing in the country, resulting in shortage of yarn and its consequent insinuations on the textile value chain at large.

APTMA's Acting Chairman Shahzad Ahmed and Chairman APTMA Punjab Gohar Ejaz were authorized by all the members of the APTMA's Central Executive Committee to constitute an Elder's Committee focussed at carrying out negotiations with the MinTex for APTMA.

The Elders' Committee encompasses senior members who represent their individual regions, as also APTMA's Chairman and Vice Chairman. During its meeting held at Islamabad on May 3, the Committee acquainted MinTex officials with APTMA's viewpoint as regards the severe cotton crisis issue.

The Committee also elucidated before the Ministry that confronted by such a severely depressing situation, there are chances that the spinning industry may cease production, causing around 70 percent of the spinning industry to pull down the shutters due to dearth of cotton.

It is believed that such conditions may spark of yarn scarcity in the country, which may distress the value-added textile sector, which may not be able to import yarn from foreign countries.
