According to Australian cotton expert, Dr Neil Forrester, owing to the scarce production and imports of cotton in Pakistan, the country, each year is suffering a loss of around US $1 billion.
While interacting by means of satellite link, with those participating in a seminar on Biotech Cotton, conducted at the National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), Faisalabad in Pakistan, he said that, it is high time for Pakistan to satisfy the growing demand of domestic textile industry and therefore, it should get hold of the latest cotton technologies, else the financial expenses in respect of imports would go on escalating.
Dr Forrester further added that, the issue of weeds in the country's cotton crop is a major hindrance in the way to achieve better yield, but the commercially available technology such as, Roundup Ready Flex and Liberty Link, can aid Pakistan in overcoming this problem.
Low Bt toxin and inferior gene expression in Bt cotton seeds could lead Pakistan's cotton crop in trouble, he said. Prior to the recent one, even Dr Forrester had paid a visit to the Karachi Cotton Association (KCA), almost two years back, to share his expert knowledge.
