Town of Export Excellence tag seeked by Pollachi

Pollachi coir industry has grown to be a major coir centre, with exports nearing Rs 2.5 billion, of which Rs 2.1 billion solely comes from coir pith and fibre exports.
Vice-Chairman of Federation of Indian Coir Exporters Association and President of Indian Coir Pith and Allied Products Manufacturers and Exporters Association, S Mahesh Kumar said that, the areas where industry depicted turnover worth Rs 2.5 billion were tagged as Town of Export Excellence (TEE) under the Foreign Trade Policy.
A memorandum was also laid before Dinesh Rai, Secretary to Government, Micro Small and Medium Enterprises of the Government of India, to consider Pollachi's entry in the list of TEE areas.
Kumar said that, with a view to earn recognition for this industrial mass, to capture new markets, it was decided to notify certain towns that manufacture goods worth Rs 10 billion or above as TEE, based on their export growth potential. Also, the upper ceiling for claiming TEE tag for the handlooms, handicraft, agriculture and fisheries sectors have been fixed at Rs 2.5 billion.
Kumar further said that, Tirupur in Tamil Nadu in hosiery, Ludhiana in Punjab with woollen wear, Haryana's Panipat with woollen blanket, Kerala's Kannur and Uttar Pradesh's Kekhra in handlooms, Aroor, Ezhupunna, Kodathuruthu and Kuthathode (AEKK) in Kerala in sea food, Jodhpur in Rajasthan in handicraft, Dewas in Madhya Pradesh in pharmaceuticals and Alleppey in Kerala in coir products have already transpired as vibrant industrial clusters.
Pollachi coir industry still seeks phytosanitary certification and testing facility for its coir. This testing plant, with financial assistance from Assistance to States for Developing Export Infrastructure and Allied Activities (ASIDE), could be established on the Coir Board's vacant plot, measuring around 10 acres.
