Noretyl installs Honeywell Safety Manager at ethylene plant

Honeywell has been selected to transform operational safety at a major ethylene plant operated by Noretyl AS. The scope of work includes the immediate installation of four Safety Manager systems and three redundant C300 controllers at the plant, located in Rafnes, Norway. Honeywell will also provide local services and support and eventually will replace all the plant's remaining, ageing safety systems.
The project includes integrating the plant's existing Honeywell distributed control system (DCS) with Safety Manager, which has a diagnostic coverage of 99.99 percent and can be used for simultaneously processing multiple Safety Integrity Functions (SIFs) that require up to Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL3). This approach will give Noretyl operators one common user interface across both systems, helping them more quickly see and understand critical situations. Maintenance costs should be reduced significantly as Noretyl uses a single supplier for both the DCS and safety systems. Additionally, the system is easier and more intuitive to operate.
Safety Manger provides excellent protection for safety applications throughout the life of an installation. It provides the basis for critical control and safety unification, reducing risks and installed costs, and improving safety while increasing uptime.
The Rafnes plant manufactures some 550,000 tons of ethylene and 80,000 tons propylene every year. Noretyl is owned by INEOS, the world's third largest chemicals company.
“As a Honeywell customer since the 1980s, we needed no introduction to the company,” said Finn Otto Aanesen, technical and product manager, INEOS. “We selected Honeywell for this effort because it was able to provide fully integrated solution and because we felt reassured by the comprehensive local service and support package.”
“The improvements we are making to the safety and reliability of the Rafnes site will help Noretyl focus more on its core business: the quick and efficient production of ethylene,” said Geir Myhre, general manager, Honeywell Process Solutions Norway. “Noretyl will become even better positioned in a highly competitive market.”
